Question tnd Answer
Have u ever dealt with gem engraving?
When a youth, many years ago, I engraved several dozens of intaglios, rather large and profound: size ≈3-4 sm. depth ≈5-6mm.
Mainly portraits: Mithridates, Augustus, the Yod heads and so on.
What’s a difference in engraving the gem
No difference for sculptor. The difference is in instruments to execute the image.
The master uses the bore machine to work up the gem, and a cutter to engrave the minisculpture with hand in metal. So the process of gem making is much more quick than that of metal cuttering. See photo: It took me about two hours to accomplish this work on Chalcedon intaglio (not completed of course). To do the same work on metal with a hand cutter I need two or three days (2-3 hours per day).
The main reason that made me stop gem engraving is an absolute simplicity to produce copying of my author’s gem intaglios, and wide multiplication with a special ultrasound machine.
